Bicycle parking at events
Well-organised bicycle parking determines how your event begins and ends. Visitors who can park their bike quickly and safely will flow onto the site without congestion, and find it just as easily afterwards. We take care of that, with temporary shelters, racks, signage and, where needed, stewards, anywhere in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Bike parking without chaos: why it deserves attention
In the Netherlands, a large proportion of your visitors arrive by bicycle, particularly at events in or near built-up areas. This is a positive thing: less car traffic, less pressure on parking and better overall accessibility. However, without a proper plan, bicycles will end up wherever they are not supposed to be. Propped against fences and building facades, blocking pedestrian routes, obstructing emergency exits and cluttering the front gardens of local residents. Every event organiser knows the consequences: complaints, blocked emergency access routes and a local authority that scrutinises your next permit application far more closely.
As a result, a growing number of municipalities are making the provision of bicycle parking a condition of the event permit. They want to see how many spaces you are providing, where they will be located and how you intend to prevent bicycles from ending up outside the designated areas. Those who leave this until a week before the event will find themselves under considerable pressure.
There is also a more subtle reason to get this right. The bicycle parking area is the first and last thing your visitors experience at your event. Ten minutes spent searching for a space, or having to untangle a bicycle from a chaotic pile at the end of the day, colours a visitor’s impression of the entire experience. A well-organised parking area with clear, orderly rows has the opposite effect: the day starts without frustration and ends the same way.
Solutions for parking bicycles, from rack to complete storage facility
How you organise bicycle parking depends on the numbers involved and the location. For most events, temporary bicycle racks form the foundation: sections of 3 metres that can be linked together into rows of any desired length. If you need the racks to remain in place throughout a renovation or refurbishment, a temporary bicycle storage facility with more robust racks is the better choice. For smaller numbers near an entrance or terrace, Sheffield stands and bicycle platforms work well: neat, stable, and requiring no modifications to the paving.
A complete parking facility is about more than racks alone. The components you can add individually or as a package:
- signage from approach routes to the parking area
- stewards to direct visitors to available spaces and manage the flow of traffic
- lighting for the later hours
- security for the parking area during the event
- a paid parking service, including on-site processing
- transport, installation, and dismantling by our own team
You choose, for each component, what you arrange yourself and what you leave to us, with a single point of contact and a single invoice for everything.
It all starts with hiring bicycle racks: there you can read which models we offer for hire and how delivery works. With more than 60,000 bicycle spaces in stock and our own transport fleet, we can almost always deliver at short notice, even if your event is coming up soon or if visitor numbers are adjusted shortly before the day itself.
Bicycle parking at every type of location
A festival site in a meadow calls for a very different approach than a market square in a historic town centre. On a large site, the focus is on capacity and flow: long rows of racks, wide walkways and a layout that connects to the cycling routes from surrounding villages and towns. In a town centre, space is at a premium and every square metre counts. There, we install compact configurations that can accommodate a large number of bicycles in a small footprint, without blocking shops or residential properties.
Bicycle parking is also organised on a large scale outside of events. Municipalities deploy temporary facilities during station renovations, in busy shopping areas during December, or as a trial ahead of a permanent installation. Companies use them for open days and staff parties. We work just as effectively for these clients as we do for festival organisers; see bicycle parking for municipalities for our approach to working with public authorities.
The ground surface is rarely an issue. Our racks stand freely on paving, grass or tarmac and leave no marks behind. Sensitive paving, underground cables and pipes, or a site that must be handed back in pristine condition: all of this is perfectly manageable, as nothing needs to be anchored to the ground.
From floor plan to peak moment: this is how we approach it
Good bicycle parking starts at the drawing board. Send us your site plan and expected visitor numbers, and we will calculate how many spaces are needed and where they are best positioned. We apply practical rules of thumb: the parking area should be located on the natural approach route to the entrance, as any facility that requires even a slight detour will be avoided. Pathways must be wide enough to turn around with a bicycle in hand. And the exit from the parking area should not conflict with the flow of pedestrians heading onto the site.
The most demanding moment of the day is the departure. Whereas visitors tend to arrive gradually throughout the afternoon, everyone wants to leave at the same time after the final act. A layout that can handle this has multiple exits, generous pathways and, where necessary, stewards to direct the flow. We know from experience how much pressure such a peak places on a parking facility and design the layout accordingly.
On the day itself, our team sets up the parking area before the first visitor arrives, and dismantles everything afterwards, even in the middle of the night if the site needs to be cleared by the following morning. You will not need to give it a second thought, and the site will be left exactly as we found it.
The quantities and the service area
Our stock comprises over 60,000 bicycle parking spaces. This allows us to serve everything from a small village fair requiring fifty bicycles to multi-day festivals attended by tens of thousands of cycling visitors. Because we operate from a central location in the Netherlands and use our own trailers, each capable of transporting up to 30,000 bicycle parking spaces per trip, even large quantities can be delivered on site rapidly. Delivery within low-emission zones is no obstacle: our fleet meets current European regulations.
Our service area covers the whole of the Netherlands, as well as Belgium and Germany. An event in Antwerp or just across the border near Kleve is handled with exactly the same approach and the same speed as a local assignment. This makes us an obvious partner for organisers running events across multiple countries: one supplier, one working method, one invoice.
Are you unsure whether your required numbers are within our range? Rest assured, they are. Our smallest assignments consist of a handful of racks for a sports day, while our largest involve complete bicycle parking facilities at events such as Paaspop, Zwarte Cross and Sail Amsterdam. You can find an overview of our projects on our reference events page, and you can read about everything involved in event bicycle parking on our bicycle parking for events page.
